Why KubeLab

You learn Kubernetes by doing it. Slides explain the concepts, but nobody remembers a kubectl command from a slide, and a shared demo cluster breaks the moment someone tries something.

KubeLab gives every learner a real cluster. It’s yours to break, every exercise starts clean, and the check tells you right away whether you got it.

Everything in the browser

Everything a Kubernetes lab needs, in one tab.

  • kubectl
  • helm
  • kustomize
  • podman
  • jq
  • vim
  • nano
  • curl
  • wget
  • openssl
  • dig
  • ssh
  • bash
  • k

Every session comes with the tools you'd use at work, already set up with completion and the k alias. Nothing to install, nothing to configure, and nothing left behind on your laptop.

Labs from the shell to Helm. Linux basics, then Kubernetes from your first pod to networking, storage, troubleshooting, RBAC and Helm, and an advanced lab after that.

Hint

You can use the kubectl run command to create a pod. You can find the documentation here.

Hints and solutions. Every exercise comes with a hint when you're stuck, and its solution once you've started it.

How KubeLab works

Your own cluster

A Kubernetes cluster that belongs to you.

Start a lab and KubeLab creates a virtual cluster just for you, with its own resource quota. Every exercise then gets a fresh namespace that its bootstrap script prepares, and it is cleaned up once you’ve solved it.

Instant checks

Feedback the moment you’re done.

Press Check and KubeLab runs the exercise’s check against your cluster. It looks at what is actually running, not at the commands you typed, so every solution that works counts.

What is KubeLab?

KubeLab is a hands-on Kubernetes learning platform. You work through labs in your browser, on a real cluster that belongs to you.

How do lab sessions work?

When you start a lab, KubeLab creates a vcluster, a virtual Kubernetes cluster, just for you. Every exercise gets a fresh namespace that its bootstrap script prepares, a web terminal with kubectl and the usual tools, and a VS Code editor. When you press Check, KubeLab runs the exercise’s check against your cluster and tells you whether you solved it.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Everything runs in the browser: the terminal, the code editor and the cluster. You only need an internet connection.

Can I use KubeLab to train my team?

Yes. Swisscom trains its engineers with KubeLab. With the Enterprise plan you get a dedicated KubeLab with labs for your stack, and we can run the workshop with you.

Can I write my own labs?

Yes. Every exercise is a handful of plain files: the instructions, a hint, a solution, a bootstrap script that prepares the cluster and a check script that verifies it. You can write your own labs in the open source version, and we build custom labs for Enterprise customers.

Where is my data hosted?

The hosted KubeLab runs in Switzerland on Natron Tech’s cloud. Every learner works in their own vcluster, so nobody sees anyone else’s work.

Your cluster is waiting.

Tell us who wants to learn Kubernetes, and we’ll get you set up.
